Safe as houses

Thursday, April 18, 2019. Daily Brit Wit.

Safe as houses:

Phrase, British

Completely safe.

“It smells of vanilla
soft and cosy
as if I ought to be curled up
before the fire.
I succumb to gooseflesh
waltzing up and down
the length of my arms
shivers racing my spine
forcing my eyes shut
as white dots float erratically
and your hand drawing designs
along my lower back
imprinting tattoos
I wish are permanent
like the sapphire on my finger
I want you with me
always and forever
sappy love stories
and gut wrenching memories
good or bad and all the in-betweens
I want
and you read my intentions
cradling me
back to front
and it’s here I finally feel
as safe as houses
like winter can’t penetrate
our false security.”

  1. This is quite romantic and I see the color lavender as I read it. Love the imagery, and specific words that you use resonate deeply, as they awaken sleeping memories I’ve tucked in for a long time. Lovely read.

    1. Thank you for your kind words! I’m glad this piece resonated with you as you’ve descended! Also, I love that you envisioned lavender because I love all shades of purple and while I may not have purposefully done so here, I use a lot of purple imagery in my poetry. Thanks again! 😊
